Epidural Steroid Injection (ESI)

Type of Procedure: Outpatient (Patient May Leave Same Day)

Treats: Pain Caused by Nerves in the Epidural Space

Procedure Description

The patient will lie on their stomach with their back exposed. The injection area will be cleaned and numbed before the procedure. Using a fluoroscope, the doctor will guide a thin needle to the problem area. From here, both a corticosteroid and an anesthetic numbing agent are injected into the epidural space of the spine (the area between the bony vertebra and the protective dura sac surrounding the spinal cord/nerves).
